Her future plans are set.
Mundelein’s Rachael Millner has made a verbal commitment to Lakeland College.
She’ll go from being a Mustang to a Muskie.
“I really like the atmosphere (there),” said the 5-foot-11 senior forward, referring to the Sheboygan, Wis., school.
Millner has been at this game a long time.
“My dad started me out in kindergarten,” Millner said. “I’ve been playing all my life.”
She’s definitely has grown up in a basketball family. Her dad, Mike, has been a Mundelein feeder coach for years, while her brother, Chris, currently is an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team at Cardinal Stritch.
With her good size, Millner enjoys playing in the middle for this Mustangs team.
“I like being under the basket,” she said. “I can pop out for a shot.” She prides herself in playing solid defens e.“We try to be a good defensive team,” she said. “And then push the ball on offense.”
Millner is staying optimistic during her final high school season.
She’s doing that despite some tough losses recently.
Last Thursday, the Mustangs (5-12) trailed 41-7 after three quarters in a 49-13 loss at Stevenson.
“Once we came back from San Diego, we’ve had problems playing four quarters,” she said.
The Mustangs showed some life on offense on Saturday in a 58-46 loss to Lake Zurich.
Recap: Even Stevenson coach Tom Dineen was surprised with how Mundelein struggled on offense.
“Mundelein is a very good defensive team and they do have some shooters,” Dineen said.
Millner had her lone bucket of the game to open the fourth quarter scoring at Stevenson. Her 12-footer ended a nearly nine-minute scoring drought for the Mustangs.
Freshman Jessica Schultz led the team in scoring that night with five points.
Despite the tough losses, Millner isn’t about to bail on her teammates.
“It’s like having 13 sisters,’’ she said.
On the schedule: Mundelein will try to get back to winning when Crystal Lake South visits on Saturday night (7:30 p.m.). On Monday night, Mundelein travels to Lake Forest for an NSC matchup at 7 p.m.
