Mihevc second at Wheeling tourney, Glenbrook North takes team title

WHEELING — Jackson Mihevc arrived at Chevy Chase Country Club in a bad mood.
He promptly birdied his first hole Saturday, and the Evanston junior later left the course much happier.
Hours after hitting a parked car’s mirror, Mihevc shot a career-best 70 to tie for second place at Wheeling’s tournament.
“I was looking for a round like this,” he said of his 2-under day. “I got it all together.”
Mihevc — who was one of eight players who broke par Saturday and one of 57 to shoot better than 80 — carried Evanston to a team score of 303 and a fifth-place finish at the 25-team tournament. Defending state champion Lake Forest, last year’s tournament winner, was not in the field because of its teacher strike.
“We’re getting hot, and we’re not going to stop,” said Evanston’s Evan TerMolen, who posted a 77.
Glenbrook North shot an even-par 288 to win the team title, the Spartans’ third invitational championship of the season. Nick Hardy, Nick Jan and Jon Goldstein all shot 1-under 71s. Brian Ohr rounded out the foursome with a 75.
“Solid day,” said Glenbrook North coach Justin Gerbich of his first appearance at the tournament. “Our depth is the key. That’s the thing that makes us a great team. We were up and down, but our kids battled back.”
Goldstein, a senior, made six birdies, one triple bogey and one double bogey on his card. He birdied his last hole to close out his day.
“Interesting round,” he said. “My mind set is always to forget the last hole, even if it was a good one.”
Wheeling’s Jack Ferguson was the medalist with his 4-under 68. Prospect took second as a team at 299. Barrington — led by seniors Nick Schippel (72) and Greg Conrad (73) — was third at 300.
“It was a good (round). The greens were really nice,” Schippel said. “We’re playing well.”
