First, they admired the surroundings.
The prestigious Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational, which was held earlier this month in Nebraska, was held at the CenturyLink Center — site of upcoming Olympic Trials (June 25-July 2).
Then, they went to work.
CATS Aquatic entered a fast foursome in the 400 medley relay. Alex Snarski (Green Oaks), Chad Church (Wadsworth), Connor Black (Mundelein) and Peter Grumhaus (Lake Forest) teamed up to take runner-up honors in 3:57.02.
That same group will be competing in the 2012 Speedo Junior National Championships on Aug. 13-17 at the Indiana University Natatorium. Black also will compete in the 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle and 200 IM. The other national qualifiers include Michelle Garland (200 IM), Church (100 breast, 50 free) and Grumhaus (200 back).
At the Omaha Swimvitational, Black added an 11th-place finish in the 200 IM (2:10.10), while Grumhaus took 11th in the 200 back (2:08.14) and 20th in the 400 free (4:08.41). Church was 21st in the 100 breast (1:06.97).
CATS swimmers are coach by Olympic swimmer Vlad Pyshnenko, a former Russian freestyle swimmer who claimed one gold medal and two silvers at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. He also earned a silver medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
