Baseball: May steps down as Carmel skipper

Updated: May 29, 2012 5:16PM

After leading the Carmel Catholic baseball program for three years, coach Joe May is stepping down as head coach.

May officially told his players after their 8-6 loss to Highland Park in a regional final on Monday.

“It has never been about me,” May said. “The first persons I wanted to know (about the decision) were the players, because it truly is about them,”

In 2010, May replaced longtime coach Chuck Gandolfi. He promptly led the Corsairs to an East Suburban Catholic Conference championship. This season, led by ace pitcher Alex Young, the team finished in second place behind Joliet Catholic.

Carmel loses all-conference players Young, Blake Bucsa and Brian Brennan but return starters Matt Ryan, Duncan Amrein, Tyler Murphy, Nico Caracciolo, Mike Stahoviak and Sean Brennan in 2013.

“I expect next year’s group to be contenders for a state title,” May said. “I felt it important they know, moving forward, they would have someone else guiding them to new heights.”

May will continue as a football assistant coach and a teacher at Carmel.
