A possible girls basketball rematch would pit Lake Zurich High School against Stevenson for the Lake Zurich Regional title on Feb. 16.
Certainly, Stevenson would be out for revenge, as Lake Zurich knocked the Patriots out of the NSC Lake Division race last week.
But what about the regional openers? Highland Park plays Stevenson at 6 p.m. Feb. 14, and Mundelein takes on Lake Zurich at 8:10 p.m. the same day.
Of course, the Bears (19-9) will be a heavy favorite to topple Mundelein (10-18). Or will they?
“Lake Zurich’s speed and shooting ability is a concern for us,” said Mundelein coach Brian Evans.
Actually, Evans’ real concern might be his team’s offensive struggles. If the team could score on a regular basis, Mundelein could be a threat.
“Our lack of offensive consistency is our main problem right now,” Evans said. “We seem to be having trouble with our scoring ability, and that is a major problem. We don’t have anyone stepping up right now attacking the basket, and taking a leadership role either offensively or defensively.”
It’s not as though Lake Zurich is taking Evans’ team for granted.
“Mundelein plays with everybody,” said Lake Zurich coach Chris Bennett.
Even Stevenson coach Tom Dineen knows the Mustangs can’t be taken lightly.
“Mundelein can be dangerous,” Dineen said.
Recap: Dineen’s squad made it 2-for-2 this season against the Mustangs, racing to a 30-9 halftime lead and posting a 58-24 win Saturday night. The Mustangs got three-pointers from Amanda and Taylor Davis, and Becca Woit. Amanda Davis paced the Mundelein offense with nine points.
“In the games where we do attack the basket and get to the foul line, we can compete with many of the teams in our conference,” Evans said. “However, when we don’t play aggressively on both ends and don’t rebound aggressively, then the inconsistency shows itself time and again. Now is the time of the season we should be playing aggressively and not timidly.”
Recap: Mundelein again struggled on offense Feb. 2, as Palatine won 44-30. Scoring leaders for the Mustangs were Amanda Davis (7 points), Molly Rosenow (7 points) and Taylor Davis (6 points).

Kathleen Felicelli and Kayla Quinn, a couple of sophomores, lead the Corsairs in last Thursday’s win over Wauconda.
The duo tallied 10 points each in the 53-27 nonconference win. Fellow sophomore Cassidy Kloss added seven points, while senior Sarah McHugh, junior Holly Sprow and sophomore Paige Gauthier scored six points apiece/
Saturday’s conference game didn’t go so well. A strong Marist team topped the host Corsairs 48-31. Felicelli led the team with eight points. McHugh had eight points.
