A three-sport athlete before his senior year, Mundelein High School swimmer Bryan Wiener dropped golf in the fall. The Mustang wanted to be ready, really ready, for his winter sport — the sport he plans to continue doing in college.
His watery results, in the 2011-12 season, while his irons continued to rust: par excellence. Wiener has been named the McDonald’s/Pioneer Press Senior Athlete of the Month at Mundelein.
His snappy 20.66 200-yard freestyle relay anchor split, clocked at the Lake County Meet, got folks talking.
And tapping keyboards.
“It’s still being discussed on swimming message boards,” Mustangs sophomore Art Kasemets said in mid-January.
Wiener touched first in the 100 free in January duals against Stevenson (48.74) and Libertyville (48.47) and swam leg No. 1 for the victorious 200 medley relay at each NSC contest.
At Saturday’s Conant Invite, in a short-course meter pool, Wiener topped the 100 free (53.66) and 100 backstroke (59.31) fields.
He plans to continue his prep baseball career in the spring, as a starting pitcher.
