GIRLS GYMNASTICS: There was the expected as well as a couple minor surprises during Thursday’s Niles North sectional. Two-time defending state champion Carmel remained on target for another state title, winning the sectional with 151.760 points, while Stevenson mustered 146.875 points to finish as runner-up.

Wrestling: Vernon Hills’ Brazil wins sectional crown

Vernon Hills star Jeremy Brazil went over the 40-win mark on Saturday. The senior will head to next weekend’s IHSA Class 2A state tournament with plenty of confidence after taking top honors at 285 pounds at the Grayslake Central Sectional. Brazil, who claimed runner-up honors at State last year, pinned Hampshire’s Zach Oranger (1:08) in the title bout, raising his overall mark to 41-1. Teammate Dan Klema also qualified to state by claiming second at 152. He was pinned by Crystal Lake Central’s Jason Fugiel in the final (1:46). Klema will take a 27-10 record to Champaign. Boys Basketball: Motzel leads way as Carmel snaps losing streak

A timely win. Carmel’s boys basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak on Tuesday night, when it knocked off visiting Nazareth 71-50. Brandon Motzel sparked the Corsairs (8-13) with a 19-point performance. Joe Molloy connected on four three-pointers to score 15 points, while Andy Kantor added 10 points. The Corsairs also received help from Zennen Davis-McKennie (8 points), Ian Kristan (8 points) and Billy Kirby (7 points). Carmel has the weekend off. It will travel to Joliet Catholic on Monday. …

Football: Proffitt named new head coach at Lake Zurich

You didn’t need to be a prophet to see this coming. Lake Zurich has named David Proffitt as its new head football coach. Proffitt, who has been the Bears’ defensive coordinator for the past six years, will replace Bryan Stortz, who has taken a job at Rock Island. Lake Zurich went with experience. BOYS BASKETBALL: Notre Dame senior Joey Solita’s right hand was healthy on Friday and visiting Carmel suffered for it. Two Carmel Catholic hockey players — seniors Joe Salvi and Cole Olmschenk — have been named to the 2012 Amateur Hockey Association Illinois (AHAI) All-State Team. Salvi, a forward, has 25 goals, 17 assists in Metro Central play this winter. Olmschenk, a defenseman, has three goals and 15 assists.
