Maine South alumna Emily Epifanio, a senior catcher on the Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team, was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region first team. Epifanio started 37 of the team’s 39 games and hit .382 with a .488 on-base percentage and a .588 slugging percentage. She finished her career with 27 home runs, the third most in program history. She also received Whitewater’s Position Player of the Week honor on April 29 after an impressive six-game stretch: The Park Ridge native hit .467 (7-for-15) and helped the Warhawks to a 5-1 record. CHARLESTON — Saturday’s Class 3A girls track and field state final was full of firsts for New Trier’s 4x800-meter relay. It was the first time this season that senior all-state runners Courtney Ackerman and Jessica Ackerman had run on the same 4x800 relay. Courtney Ackerman decided she felt healthy enough after Friday’s state preliminaries to run in two races on Saturday. She joined her twin sister, sophomore Mimi Smith and senior Kathleen Keene on the relay. The Trevians reaped the benefits of that decision en route to winning a state title. Jessica Ackerman, running the relay’s third leg, rocketed from … ]]> Sat, 18 May 2013 20:24:09 -0500 http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20201030-419/new-trier-captures-state-title-in-4x800-relay-schmidt-wins-pole-vault.html http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20201030-419/new-trier-captures-state-title-in-4x800-relay-schmidt-wins-pole-vault.html <![CDATA[ Mundelein falls to McAuley, finishes fourth ]]>

LINCOLNSHIRE — Mundelein’s girls water polo team may have lost the game, but that would have been impossible to guess based on the reactions of the players after Saturday’s third-place match at the state tournament. “I’m a very proud coach,” Mundelein coach Drew Schneider said following his team’s 11-9 loss to Mother McAuley. Schneider was trying to dry himself off after getting pushed in the pool by his seniors. Eventually, the whole team jumped in to celebrate the program’s first trip to the final four in 10 years. “We gave it our best shot today,” senior Courtney Perrault said. “It’s … ]]> Sat, 18 May 2013 18:38:00 -0500 http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20199739-419/mundelein-falls-to-mcauley-finishes-fourth.html http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20199739-419/mundelein-falls-to-mcauley-finishes-fourth.html <![CDATA[ Stars quiet as Mundelein falls in state semis ]]>

LINCOLNSHIRE — The game plan was obvious for Mundelein’s girls water polo team in its 8-7 state semifinal loss to Lincoln-Way Central Saturday. The Mustangs needed to stop the Knights’ star player, Danijela Jackovich. The Stanford-bound senior had 167 goals coming into the game, but the Mustangs shut her down. “We executed our game plan,” Mundelein coach Drew Schneider said. “We held her to three goals, and their coach told me nobody had done that to Danijela all year.” But while the Mustangs shut down Jackovich, their own star was held in check by a different type of defense: the … ]]> Sat, 18 May 2013 16:14:00 -0500 http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20196105-419/stars-quiet-as-mundelein-falls-in-state-semis.html http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20196105-419/stars-quiet-as-mundelein-falls-in-state-semis.html <![CDATA[ Lakes dominates Vernon Hills Sectional ]]>

VERNON HILLS — Lakes was dominant during Friday night’s Class 2A Vernon Hills Sectional boys track and field meet. So dominant, in fact, that the Eagles’ 144 team points were nearly twice as many as their next closest competitors. Lakes senior Ty Summers’ mark of 53 feet, 1/2 inch in the shot put was good enough to send him to next week’s state meet in Charleston. Among his teammates also headed downstate are Shaun Beutlich (10.97 seconds in the 100-meter dash), Ryan Prais (1:59.29 in the 800) and Ray Trevor (49.28 in the 400). CHARLESTON — Senior pole vaulters Carly Schmidt (Lake Forest), Christine Stitcher (Deerfield) and Nicole Jaffke (Libertyville) stood out from a large group of area athletes competing in the Class 3A girls track and field preliminaries at Eastern Illinois Friday. The trio cleared 11 feet — the top qualifying height Friday — to advance. The state finals for all three classes are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. Jaffke will be joined in the field-event finals by teammate Hayley Becker, a senior high jumper who cleared 5-04 Friday. A few other area athletes will also compete in Saturday’s finals. FRANKFORT — Mundelein junior Cam Mueller is cool playing second fiddle to classmate Colin McCarthy. While both gymnasts enjoyed their share of individual glory this season, it took their collaboration — along with that of a few specialists like Jacob Petri and Brandon Swanson — to enjoy team success this spring. Mueller and McCarthy both advanced in multiple events during Saturday’s individual state championships. While McCarthy advanced in five events, Mueller came closest to winning a title, tying Glenbrook North’s Nate Elfant and Hersey’s Matt Swanson for second place on vault with a 9.3, and sharing second on still rings … ]]> Fri, 17 May 2013 19:50:01 -0500 http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20179507-419/mueller-wraps-up-year-as-mr-consistency.html http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20179507-419/mueller-wraps-up-year-as-mr-consistency.html <![CDATA[ Fremd trims Barrington for Buffalo Grove Sectional championship ]]>

BUFFALO GROVE — Just six days after holding off a formidable rival to win the Mid-Suburban League championship, Fremd frustrated another familiar opponent Thursday night. Held at Buffalo Grove High School on a clear, cool night with almost no wind, the Vikings used their superior depth in the hurdles, high jump and pole vault to defeat Barrington and win their second consecutive 3A boys track sectional championship. “It feels so great. People say Palatine is our biggest rival, but we know it’s Barrington,” sophomore sprinter Jawan Gaines said, who ran the final leg of the Vikings’ state-qualifying 4x400 relay team. … ]]> Thu, 16 May 2013 22:41:22 -0500 http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20155155-419/fremd-trims-barrington-for-buffalo-grove-sectional-championship.html http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20155155-419/fremd-trims-barrington-for-buffalo-grove-sectional-championship.html <![CDATA[ May 16 high school sports scoreboard ]]>

MUNDELEIN — Mundelein right-hander Mitch Schulewitz wanted to make certain he’d be on the mound for the biggest game of his life. So the day before his Mustangs were slated to face Wauconda in the North Suburban Conference title game, he had a question for his coach. “He came to me yesterday and said, in no uncertain terms, ‘Coach, is anybody pitching this game for us other than me?’ ” Mundelein coach Todd Parola said. “And so I told him, ‘We’ll see tomorrow.’ “ Not only did the sidearming Schulewitz pitch, he was dominant. LINCOLNSHIRE — Defense and Karrie Kozokar proved to be the winning combination for the Mundelein girls water polo team in its state quarterfinal match. Mundelein’s 11-5 win over Barrington gives it a spot in the semifinals at 9 a.m. Saturday against Lincoln-Way Central. Kozokar was the story of the game, scoring nine goals to tie an IHSA state tournament record. She scored in all different ways: from inside two meters, from the left side and three times on a penalty shot. “Give credit where credit is due,” Barrington coach Mark Markwell said. “Number 18 (Kozokar) played great and (coach) Drew … ]]> Thu, 16 May 2013 21:23:11 -0500 http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20154719-419/mundelein-kozokar-top-barrington.html http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20154719-419/mundelein-kozokar-top-barrington.html <![CDATA[ Carmel still searching for identity ]]>

MUNDELEIN — Will the real Carmel Corsairs please stand up? That’s the question softball coach Jason Raymond and his players are asking themselves as they enter the home stretch of the 2013 regular season. Because with only three games left on the schedule to open the week, Carmel remains a team in search of its true identity. Will it be the powerhouse Corsairs who seem to outslug opponents at will? Or will it be the club that’s shown its youth, with occasional mental and defensive lapses costing it multiple games this spring? Last week, the Corsairs (18-9 overall as of … ]]> Fri, 17 May 2013 17:33:29 -0500 http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20089359-419/carmel-still-searching-for-identity.html http://mundelein.suntimes.com/sports/20089359-419/carmel-still-searching-for-identity.html <![CDATA[ Fairweather has the Mustangs smiling ]]>

Some players have a home run trot. Mundelein junior left fielder Lauren Fairweather has a home run face. “Every time she hits one, she has this overjoyed look on her face like she’s having so much fun,” senior pitcher Erin Kennelly said. “We wonder how many she will hit.” Added Mustangs coach Brett Wilhelm: “The best thing is seeing how excited Lauren is. It’s so rewarding to see that smile on her face.” Fairweather has had plenty of opportunities to smile this season. She already has established a new school record for home runs in a season with nine.
