The North Suburban Conference has named its 2012 all-conference baseball team. Saturday afternoon’s IHSA Class 4A boys baseball regional championship game between Mundelein and Fremd didn’t start out quite the way the host Mustangs had planned. Mundelein senior starting pitcher Jared Mandel was uncharacteristically touched-up for three runs by the Vikings in the top of the first, which put his club in rather unfamiliar territory. “I can count the number of times we’ve been behind in a game this season on one hand,” Mustangs coach Todd Parola said after the game. Carmel Catholic sophomore pitcher Nicole Bitter tossed a one-hit gem, and the result was a 2-0 shutout win — and an IHSA Class 4A regional softball championship for the host Corsairs — over visiting Mundelein, Saturday. It was Carmel’s first regional varsity softball title since 2007, and just the second in school history. Bitter, who allowed three walks and struck out nine, was in control all game. Colin McCarthy was geared up to wow ’em on floor exercise during last weekend’s boys gymnastics state meet at Lincoln-Way East in Frankfort. The Mundelein High School sophomore floored ’em on vault instead. McCarthy, a clear favorite to medal on floor after his dazzling 9.9 routine at the previous weekend’s Palatine sectional, fell on floor in Saturday’s state preliminaries. “He never falls on floor,” said Mundelein coach Jesse Piland.
