Edgar Nieto, of Mundelein, a student at Dominican University was honored as a Student Laureate by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois during special ceremonies at the State Capitol in Springfield. The following Mundelein High School seniors have been named semifinalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program: Stephen Slaughter and John Syme will be eligible for a number of scholarships offered through the program should they become finalists. The National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association of America, Inc., or NISCA, has recognized the Libertyville High School Varsity Boys Swim Team as a recipient of its Scholar Team Award. The Scholar Team Award recognizes teams achieving high academic standards and is based on the average cumulative GPA of an entire varsity team of 12 or more athletes. The goal of the Scholar Team Award is to recognize academic success in the classroom for entire swimming, diving, and water polo teams, as well as athletic success in the pool. Mundelein High School show beneifts Make-A-Wish

Mundelein High School students will sing, dance, juggle, read poetry and more to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation at their annual variety show at 7 p.m. April 5 in the Mundelein High School Auditorium. All tickets are $5 each. In addition to the formal acts, student emcees will also perform between acts to entertain the audience. A panel of judges will include school staff members and the Turnabout King and Queen. Javier Martinez serves as the advisor for the show. MUNDELEIN — For young children in Lake County, it might be hard to grasp global problems or do anything about them. But a Mundelein man is helping students at a local school do both. The 121 pupils at Mundelein’s St. Mary of the Annunciation School have an annual Mardi Gras party on the Tuesday before the start of Lent, called a mission party. The event raises money for charitable causes, and parents set up carnival games in the gym. Traditionally, money raised has benefitted the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart, which aids orphaned and disadvantaged children in Uganda. But …

District 79 grants for students

The Fremont Education Foundation worked to disburse over $44,000 in approved grants to District 79 educators this school year. Add in $10,000 in partnership monies that the district and board of education approved, and that brings the grand total to more than $54,000. These grant funds that will support, complement and enhance educational opportunities for the 2,300 students at Fremont. The foundation received 20 grant requests from teachers, administrators, and other educators in the district. Of those grants, the foundation was able to fund the majority. Cheerleading squad takes the floor Fifteen College of Lake County students, former rivals at high school cheerleading competitions, have formed a new Lancer Cheerleading Club, which gaåve its first public performance at men’s and women’s home basketball games on Jan. 17. Teresa Aguinaldo, interim executive director of Student Life, said she is excited about the revival of cheerleading at CLC after a long hiatus. (The college had a pom-pom squad several years ago and an athletic department-sponsored cheerleading squad in the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s). Grand champions Mundelein High School’s co-ed show choir, Mundelein Sound, was named Grand Champion at the Jan. 19 Milton, Wisc., Show Choir Invitational. Fifteen choirs from Illinois and Wisconsin gathered at Milton High School to perform for judges and a large audience. Sound also took awards as Best Instrumental Ensemble, Best Choreography and Best Vocal Sound. The awards didn’t stop there, however. Mundelein Lights, the MHS all-female show choir, was named top Women’s Show Choir. The show choirs will present a concert at MHS at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 in the auditorium. Three seats are up for grabs in the April 9 election for Diamond Lake School District 76 board, and voters will be presented with four possible contenders to fill them. Incumbents Keith Loeffler, Beverly Seaver and Laura Vogt are running to keep their spots, while the newcomer is Long Grove resident Adam Plummer. Plummer has never run for elected office.
