MUNDELEIN – The village will have a new president in 2013. As the Dec. 26 deadline passed, Village President Kenneth Kessler did not file petitions for a third term. Current, one-term Village Trustee Steve Lentz has filed for the office, along with Trustee Robin Meier and Wally Frasier. Meier was appointed to the Village Board in 2009 and won a seat in 2011. Lentz, on the other hand, is at the end of his trustee term and would be off the board if his village president campaign was unsuccessful. In an upset, Democrat Brad Schneider narrowly slipped past U.S. Rep Bob Dold Tuesday, ousting the freshman congressman and giving the 10th District its first Democrat in decades. Dold conceded just before 11 p.m. He lost by barely 2,400 votes out of more than 200,000 cast. Dold, a moderate, was remapped into a Democratic-leaning, north suburban district. At one point Tuesday, he appeared to be heading toward re-election. But as votes from the Lake County portion of the district came in, Schneider narrowly surged past him. The Democratic incumbent was elected to her sixth term Tuesday night, earning 55 percent of the vote. A steady and significant number of voters have turned out to polling places in Cook County, but rain this afternoon and evening could hurt voter turnout. Michael Carbone is running for Lake County Board on a promise to lower property taxes, create jobs and keep the workings of government transparent. But it’s Carbone’s own past that is murky. For most of his life he was known as Michael Jorudd. Under that name, he racked up criminal arrests and charges that include driving on a suspended license, criminal trespass to property, assault and two DUI charges. Carbone insists that the fact he’s now using a different name doesn’t mean he’s trying to hide anything.
