Candidate Forum

The Hawthorn Education Association (will host a School Board Candidate Forum at 7 p.m. April 2 at Hawthorn Middle South, 600 N. Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills. (Please note this is a new date, as candidates had conflicts with the previous forum date.) All candidates have been invited – Ghita Mueller, Sangita Parande, Jeanne Engelkemeir and Louis Gatta. Three four-year positions are up for election on April 9. District 73 thanks current board members Tim Shanahan, Julie Weiler and Theresa Calabrese, who are not seeking re-election.

Math team takes first

The Hawthorn Middle South Math Team ended their season with a bang. On Feb. 23, the eighth-grade team brought home the first place from the Carmel High School Math Invitational. More than 200 students took part in the event, with Middle South competing in the large school division at both the seventh- and eighth-grade levels. The team included Apirajitha Adiraju, Andrew Kim, Alex Orlov, Abhay Ram, Matt Weiss and Eunice Yoon. In addition to winning the team award, Apirajitha Adiraju placed third in the eighth-grade individual competition.

The weekend prior, the math team took part in the Lake/McHenry Regional Math Counts competition, where students competed against 18 other schools. Four Hawthorn Middle South students finished in the top quartile –Alexander Frumkin (seventh place), Eunice Yoon (12th place), Aparajitha Adiraju (16th place), and Alex Orlov (19th place).

Holocaust Museum visit

This winter, students from Hawthorn Middle South visited the Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie. The field trip included the opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of the events of the time from their tour guides and special speakers.

Current on Fees?

Families with outstanding or past due fees have already received one notice. If payment arrangements are needed, please contact the district office at (847)990-4280. Please note that past due accounts are eventually sent to collections, which incurs and additional 50-percent fee.

Hawthorn calendar

Spring Break will be March 25 through April 1, with school resuming April 2.
