Student drop
date is July 1
Hawthorn’s student enrollment drop date is July 1. Current students who have not properly completed online registration or required residency verification by that date will be dropped. Dropped students are no longer included in Hawthorn records, nor are they placed in a school or a classroom. If a parent does want a dropped student to attend Hawthorn schools in the fall, the parent/guardian must appear in person at Hawthorn District Office to complete a re-enrollment process. Students will not be guaranteed placement in their previous school. Rather, students will be placed in a school based on space availability. More information is available at www.hawthorn73.org/registration or by calling (847) 990-4200.
Tentative budget under consideration
A tentative version of the 2012-13 Hawthorn District 73 budget was presented to the Board of Education during the June 11 meeting. The board will then address the information at the June 25 meeting (7 p.m. at Hawthorn District Office, 841 West End Court, Vernon Hills). Presentation information and resources will be posted at www.hawthorn73.org when they become available.

Most school business can be completed through the District Office. If you do require the help of your school office, please call ahead to ensure that appropriate staff is available to assist you.
Summer reading assignments and suggestions

Students are required to read one book from the provided list and complete a short assignment, which is due by Sept. 7, 2012. Because reading is such a powerful way for children to stay sharp during the summer, our library media specialists have also put together some book suggestions for students at all grade levels. Check for the lists at www.hawthorn73.org.
Bus freeze
begins July 19
This year’s bus freeze kicks in on July 19 and will run through Sept. 18. Please have all of your transportation requests completed before July 19 to ensure a smooth transition into the next school year. Contract approved for superintendent
The contract for Dr. Jill Gildea, superintendent of Fremont School District 79, was extended by five years, following unanimous school board approval this month. The contract begins July 1. Dr. Gildea is finishing her second year as superintendent of Fremont School District 79.
In the fall, the school board commissioned its administration to develop a Strategic Plan. The plan was the outcome of information provided by staff and parent focus groups, survey and achievement data. The board revisited its mission and articulated its vision of providing an exemplary education focused on whole child development, collaboration, and fiscal responsibility.
Dr. Gildea believes the outcome of the strategic plan will result in the following:
Working together to yield a safe, student-centered and future-focused learning organization.
Collaborating to create a seamless preschool through eighth grade educational experience for the benefit of each learner.
PTO announces
winner
The Fremont PTO named Susan Hurley as the recipient of the EVA honor this year. The Excellence in Volunteering Award was established in 1991 to honor long-time Fremont volunteers whose last child is graduating from the district.
Mrs. Hurley volunteered in many capacities, including hospitality, fundraising, the holiday boutique, Ladies Night Out, book fairs, and cultural arts.
She began her volunteering at Fremont when her oldest son, Matthew, was in kindergarten. Matthew will be starting his sophomore year at the University of Virginia in the fall. Andrew will be a freshman at Mundelein High School in the fall.
Foundation hosts record-breaking fundraiser
Record sponsorship dollars, record donations, and record attendance are the trio of success stories the Fremont Education Foundation has achieved from its most recent golf fundraiser event held this month.
Guin Financial led the way to a truly amazing day of golf and a locally, star-studded night of fun as this firm was the event sponsor for the Fremont Education Foundation Golf, Dinner and Auction event. The rain ceased just in time for the scramble start. George McGuire, Dennis Bruns, Dave Hofflander, Eric Jensen team took first with a 12 under score of 60.
PSA Dewberry, CIC Corporation, and Pepper Construction all sponsored the event at the silver level. Christine Lee with RE/MAX, Harrison Wallace, and Events.org all sponsored the event at the bronze level. These sponsors helped defray the cost of the event, food and beverages. More importantly, their support will allow the foundation to fund more innovative and unique grants.
During the 2011-2012 school year, the Fremont Education Foundation supported over $25,000 in grants that included funding for rockets and robotics classes, Northern Illinois STEMfest event, iPads, Girls on the Run, a long jump/shot-put/discuss runway and sand pit, author nights, an Internet Safety Night, CPR for students, butterfly artwork, art tiles, and Promethean ActivBoards. A main objective of the Fremont Education Foundation is to grant funds to supplement and compliment educational opportunities that transcend traditional classroom activities.
Students receive school band awards
Fremont Middle School Band Director Brent Burger selected eighth graders Louis Bourque and Kaitlin Lambert to receive the school’s Outstanding Music Achievement Award for 2012. Eighth graders Jake Landry and Jaryd Pacis received the Outstanding Jazz Musician Award for 2012.
