Teams rank in
competition
One of three Libertyville Elementary District 70 teams involved in an international problem-solving program on the global level ranked as one of the top ten teams in the world.
Destination Imagination challenges students in problem solving techniques. This year, students from Adler Park, Butterfield, and Highland had teams competing in the state, regional and global competitions. Recently three of the four teams made it to the global competition held at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn.
The following teams will compete on the global level:
• Ranking sixth in the world out of 58 teams competing on the Global level was the Butterfield School “1, 2, 3 Not It” team that performed the challenge “Assembly Required.” In the category, the team designed and built equipment that retrieved parts and delivered assembled products made to order, all to a special story. Team members of the all female group included Emma Chandler, Jillian Cote, Hannah Hartshorne, Alyssa Kline and Erin Leese. Team managers were Elizabeth and Doug Chandler. This is the highest any District 70 team has placed in the Global competition according to recent records.
• Ranking 13th in the world out of 70 teams was the Highland Middle School “That Team Over There” team, which competed in the “Assembly Required” challenge. Highland team members were Elias Anderson, Mitry Anderson, Alex Dikelsky, Jacob Dikelsky, Andy Liu, Annika McDermott-Hinman and Adam Sparks. The manager was Greg Sparks. Mitry said the team made a minor mistake at the beginning of the competition, which took it out of winning but ended up with the highest score for the equipment the team built.
• Tying for 47th place in the world out of 71 teams was the Adler Park School team “Gator Warriors” that performed the challenge “News to Me” where students performed a skit about the cause-and-effect relationship between two unrelated news stories, then have all the plans suddenly become discombobulated by a one-minute glitch. Members included Annika Bjorklund, Abigail Cima, Maddy Jacobs and Ellie Seyl. The team manager was Eric Cima.
The sponsors for all the District 70 teams this year were teachers Karen McLean and Ashley Zeinz.
Congratulations to Batson
Libertyville School District 70 congratulates psychologist Ashley Batson on receiving her doctorate degree in educational psychology with a focus in human learning and development from National-Louis University.
Dr. Batson graduated following her defense hearing on April 26.
Highland students to be honored
Several Highland Middle School eighth grade students are being honored this month.
Receiving the Daughters/Sons of the American Revolution Award are Jacklyn Ovassapian and Preston Wrolstad. Jacklyn is the daughter of Melina and Armen Ovassapian and Preston is the son of Ruth and Stephen Wrolstad, all of Libertyville.
Receiving the American Legion Medal are Hannah Manetsch and Cameron Chen. Hannah is the daughter of Cathy and Scott Manetsch and Cameron is the son of Heather and Chris Chen, all of Libertyville.
Receiving the American Legion Certificate are Elizabeth Murphy and Elliot Stahnke. Elizabeth is the daughter of Eva and Dennis Murphy, and Elliot is the son of Mei Mei Chen and Robert Stahnke, all of Libertyville.
Summer school open house set for June 8
Libertyville Elementary District 70 summer school will be held from June 11 until July 12 at Highland Middle School, 310 W. Rockland Road, Libertyville. Classes also will be held next door at Rockland School, 160 W. Rockland Road. Classes start at 8:30 a.m. and students are dismissed at 11:45 a.m.
An Open House for summer school will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. on June 8. Students can find their classrooms and get a feel for the school at that time.
Boards chosen
The new Family Association boards have been chosen for the 2012-2013 school year in Libertyville Elementary District 70.
The Adler Park School board President Cassie Clark - President, 1st VP Sue Wilms, 2nd VP Tammy Hansen, Treasurer - Elise Schroeder, Secretary - Karla Berk.
The Butterfield Family Association board will be President Nancy Bleck, First Vice President Deb Miley, Second Vice President Linda Oliverii, Treasurer Sue Ellen Yurek, Assistant Treasurer Charlotte Lawless and Secretary Doreen Flamank.
The Copeland Manor Family Association board will be President Angela Eads, First Vice President Tania Zombollo, Second Vice President Laurie Bond, Treasurer Jolie Bath and Secretary Andrea Jeglum.
At Highland Middle School, the Highland Family Association board for next year will be President Cheryl Otto, First Vice President Terri Golwas, Second Vice President Jean Giardina, Treasurer Julie Damenti and Secretary Colleen Pachowski.
The Rockland Family Association Executive Board will be President Patti Fuller, First Vice President Brett McEwan, Second Vice President Brooke Hamilton, Treasurer Michele Phillips and Secretary Lori Rosten.
Special Education receives praise
Once again, the Special Education Department of Libertyville Elementary District 70 has received the highest marks given by the Illinois State Board of Education.
Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004, the ISBE reviews the performance of special education services in school districts throughout the state. District 70 received the highest score of four in all categories for the 2010-11 school year. The rank means the district is meeting the special education requirements of students.
When annually reviewing the data, the ISBE can rate districts with scores that indicate the district needs substantial intervention, needs intervention, needs assistance or meets requirements.
District 70 typically scores high, said Marilynn Menuey, Director of Special Education. The staff has been meeting their mark so often that, Menuey says, it has become an expectation that often goes unnoticed.
Writing contest winners announced
A creative writing contest at Cook Memorial Public Library has resulted in student winners from four of the Libertyville Elementary District 70 schools.
Winners from Highland Middle School were Nate Sweitzer (“Below Deck”), Mary Lothspeich (“Hair”), Kyle Patterson (“Where I’m From”), Jennifer Graham (“Invisible Friends”), Tatum Scheibler (“Empty Thoughts”) and Nia McClendon (“The Magic Word”).
The winners from Copeland Manor School were Rachel Bond (“The Crazy Pink Nail Polish Adventure”), Amanda Gourley (“Disappeared”), Megan Hanson (“The Goldfish”), and Kelly Shinnick (“Sleeping on the Sub”).
The winner from Butterfield School is Kylie Skie (“Fear, Chalk, and Triumph”) and the winner from Adler Park School is Annika Bjorklund (“Holly, Erika and the Purple-eyed Magician”).
