Hawthorn’s Most Improved award winners
Congratulations to the 2012 David Yomtoob Hawthorn’s Most Improved Winners, who were honored at a reception on May 14. Students were selected based on their academic achievement as well as essays describing how student believe they have grown and improved. Congratulations to 2nd graders Fernando Lopez, Jose Conejo, Ella Caroline Soehlke, Lauren Williams and Bridgett Bolotin, to 5th graders Jenny Deng, Alondra Marban, Grace Ann Ramirez, Melissa Herrera and Erik Ly, and 8th graders Nadia Escobar and Eduardo Casarrubias. Congratulations!
Best wishes to retiring Hawthorn staffers
Hawthorn is preparing to honor retiring staff members, who will be feted during a June 5 celebration. Thank you and best wishes to Susie Ahrens, Vicki Brown, Karen Cencula, Sharon Cepican, Monica Dawson, Jeannie Hiss, Sharon Polisky, Lynda Smeltzer, Diane Treu, Kathy Valentini and Susan Zook.
No registration – no schedule
Hawthorn families should have already completed registration for the 2012-13 school year. Registration must be complete in order to receive next year’s class schedule. Students entering grades three and six are required to prove residency. Fee payments and health forms are required before school begins in the fall. Students not registered by July 1 will be dropped from enrollment. Re-enrollment will require an in-person visit to District Office to complete a longer student enrollment process. Sixteen advance to state track meet
The Hawthorn Middle North and Middle South boys and girls track athletes turned in tremendous performances at the IESA Sectional Meet held in Antioch. All of the teams did well, with several students heading on to the state meet in Peoria on May 18 and 19. Representing Middle North is Ryan Antenore (seventh grade discus), Jordyn Bunning (seventh grade 100m hurdles), Felipe Yanez (eighth grade 800m run) and Lupe Matias (seventh grade 800m run). Representing Middle South is Shane Williamson (seventh grade 1600m run and 800m run); Molly Wasserberg (eighth grade 400m dash); Noah Agnew (eighth grade high jump - sectional record 6’3”); the eighth grade girls 4 x 200m relay team of Dana Meline, Shannon Skeoch, Danielle Comitor, Mally Wasserberg and Josie Amidei; and the eighth grade boys 4 x 400m relay team of Noah Agnew, Brad Fisher, Brandon Coty, Phil Cho and Sam Laneman. Congratulations to our state qualifiers, and to all of the students and coaches for a fine season.
Chorus awarded gold rating
The Hawthorn Middle North Chorus was recently awarded a Gold Medal during the Performing Arts Consultants Six Flags Great America Contest, held at the Round Lake Civic Center on May 12.
The students wowed the crowd with their poise, professionalism and perfect performance. The concert, which included student musicians on piano, flute and vocal solos, ended with a spectacular homage to The Phantom of the Opera. Afterward, the group enjoyed themselves at Six Flags Great America. Band takes the show on the road
The Hawthorn Elementary North band will take their show on the road, performing a springtime concert for the residents of Hawthorn Lakes Retirement Center. The special concert is scheduled for May 31 at 11 a.m.

Summer reading assignments available
Students who will attend Hawthorn middle schools next year (future 6th, 7th and 8th graders) have a reading assignment to complete during the summer. Students are required to read one book from the provided list and complete a short assignment, which is due by September 7, 2012. Because reading is such a powerful way for children to stay sharp during the summer, our library media specialists have also put together some book suggestions for all of our students. Hawthorn Calendar
There is no school on May 28 in observance of Memorial Day.
Promotion ceremonies (and last day of classes) for eighth graders will be June 4.
The last day for kindergarten will be June 4 and the last one-hour day for students in grades one through seven will be June 5.
