Registration required for 2012-13

Hawthorn families were asked to complete student registration for the 2012-13 school year by May 11. Parents were mailed SnapCodes and directions for completing the online process in mid-April. Assistance and computers are available at District Office, 841 West End Court, Vernon Hills from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you did not receive your SnapCode, please contact your school immediately. You must complete registration in order to receive next year’s class schedule. Students entering grades three and six are required to prove residency, which can be done by providing photocopies of appropriate documents, as outlined on Residency Verification form posted on the Hawthorn registration website, www.hawthorn73.org/registration. Fee payments and health forms are required before school begins in the fall. Students not registered by July 1 will be dropped from enrollment. Re-enrollment will require an in-person visit to District Office to complete a longer student enrollment process. For more information, please visit www.hawthorn73.org/registration or call the District Office at (847) 990-4200.

Seventh graders shine in cartoon contest

When it comes to combining social studies knowledge with creativity, the students in Kyle McKenzie’s seventh grade social studies class at Hawthorn Middle North are outstanding. In fact, Emily Komessar beat out thousands of middle school students from across the country to win the 3rd annual California First Amendment Judicial Cartoon Contest. Students Jenna Joyce and Sinead Prentiss also received honorable mention in the same high-profile contest. This is Hawthorn’s second time winning the contest over the past three years! To view the cartoons (and receive a good refresher on First Amendment Rights) visit www.courtsed.org. Congratulations!

First graders head to nature center

Hawthorn Elementary South first graders are excited about their upcoming field trip to Heller Nature Center in Highland Park. The visit offers students the opportunity to explore the four basic components of all habitats – food, water, shelter and space – and how they are important to the survival of living things. This powerful field trip is provided thanks to a grant from Target, which was awarded to first grade teacher Jeanne Bleck.

Townie Day
is May 25

Students at Townline Elementary and the Hawthorn School of Dual Language will hone their team skills during the 5th Annual Townie Day on May 25. Townie Day is a day for enjoying community through a variety of activities that promote trust, communication, teamwork – and fun. Activities include everything from relay races to creative problem solving, with all activities taking place outside, weather permitting.

Schedule screenings by May 21

Hawthorn School District 73 is conducting developmental screenings of three- to five-year-old children. Screenings are free to participating children and their families who live within Hawthorn District 73 boundaries and will identify children eligible for enrollment into free local early childhood programs. The screenings will examine each child’s speech, language, cognitive, social and motor skill development. For more information and to schedule an appointment, please call (847) 990-4243 by May 21. Screenings will be held on May 29, 30 and 31 between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the HELPs wing of Aspen Elementary, located at 500 N. Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills.

Summer reading assignments now available

Students who will attend Hawthorn middle schools next year (future sixth, seventh and eighth graders) have a reading assignment to complete during the summer. Students are required to read one book from the provided list and complete a short assignment, which is due by Sept. 7. For your convenience, the PTO will have the books available for purchase during the Middle School Spring Book Fair and Open House as well as through an order form, posted at www.hawthorn73.org. Because reading is such a powerful way for children to stay sharp during the summer, our library media specialists have also put together some book suggestions for all of our students. Check for the lists at www.hawthorn73.org.
