Mundelein tea maker issues national recall

MUNDELEIN — A random inspection by the Food and Drug Administration led to the recall of bubble tea that was packaged and sold by Mundelein-based Boba Direct between Dec. 26 and Jan. 4 to restaurants and food shops throughout the country.
Boba Direct, located at 807 E. Orchard St., failed to declare milk as an ingredient for 22 of its assorted flavored powders. People allergic to milk could face a serious or life-threatening reaction if they consume this product.
No one has reported any illnesses or allergic reactions, the company said in a statement.
Blended as a tea, slushy and juice, bubble tea is primarily based off jasmine green tea and milk or creamer. It was first created in Taiwan in the 1980s and has become popular in the United States in recent years.
The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 requires that all packaged foods containing milk have that ingredient disclosed on the package.
Company executives are willfully participating in a recall and, in the statement, said they have revised their printing procedures to include “milk” on the list of ingredients.
Customers who may have purchased the 2.2 pound bags between Dec. 26 and Jan. 4 can call (866) 487-2622 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to received a full refund.
