Lulo’s bringing Cuban cuisine to Lake County

GRAYSLAKE — His Cuban restaurant is more than a business to Rick Felipez.
It’s the fulfillment of a long-time dream and a way to carry on his family’s heritage.
Serving only dishes made from family recipes, Lulo’s Cuban Café opened 10 months ago and is named after Felipez’s father, a Cuban immigrant. Saying it’s the only Cuban restaurant in Lake County, Felipez and his sister Hayden Felipez-Taylor, both Grayslake residents, take pride in every meal they prepare.

Q: What business were you in prior to opening the restaurant and what inspired you to do it?
A: I was in the construction business. It’s something we wanted to do for a very, very long time. It’s just a long-time dream of ours. We love the food; it’s all family recipes.
Q: How would you describe your restaurant?
A: We are a full-service restaurant with authentic, Cuban, homemade cuisine. My sister and I are partners in the business.
Q: What is your most popular menu item?
A: It’s the Cuban sandwich. It has ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese and pickle. That’s the most popular item. A lot of people know about it. Subway had it for a few months. Ours is the way it’s supposed to be — thin sliced.
Q: What else is a favorite dish?
A: Ropa Vieja. You can describe it as a Cuban pot roast. It’s a chuck, and it’s slow cooked and pulled.
Q: Do customers come a long way to eat at Lulo’s?
A: We get them from all around Lake County. We do draw a lot of Cuban, Puerto Rican and Hispanic people because they love Cuban food. And then we have a lot of customers who have never heard of it.
Q: Do you do the cooking?
A: My sister’s the chef. Everything is homemade from scratch.
Q: Where is Lulo’s located?
A: Our address is 970 Harris Road in the Stations Square Prairie Crossings. We’re on Route 137 just west of Casey/Midlothian Road.
