Newsmakers: Rothstein of Vernon Hills is named Tanglewood Music Fellow

Rothstein is named Tanglewood Music Fellow
Bass clarinetist Samuel Rothstein, a native of Vernon Hills, was selected to become a fellow of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Music Center. Samuel is participating in his first summer at the BSO’s summer music academy for emerging professional musicians of exceptional ability.
This season, as part of the Tanglewood Music Center, Samuel has worked with famous conductors including Gunther Schuller and Miguel Harth-Bedoya. On Aug. 7, he was led by Lorin Maazel in Tchaikovsky’s Overture 1812, serving as principal chair for the Tanglewood on Parade Concert. Throughout the season, Samuel will perform in a number of other concerts with the TMC Orchestra and in the Festival of Contemporary Music.
The Tanglewood Music Center offers a demanding schedule of study and performance, seven days a week for eight weeks, for instrumentalists, conductors, singers, and composers.
Vernon Hills Y Swimmers win championship
The Vernon Hills-based Central Lake YMCA Turtles Swim Team completed its summer season in top form by finishing in first place at the Northern Illinois Swim Conference (NISC) Division C championship meet in Hawthorn Woods. Six teams from Lake and Cook counties participated in the July 25 finals.
The Turtles, comprised of 54 swimmers ages 5 to 18, won 20 individual events and placed in the top three in all their relays en route to the team’s first-place finish. In addition, Head Coach Maureen Rancourt notes that four Turtles achieved significant improvements in their individual times at the championship meet. They are: Sam Halloway, 13, of Libertyville in 50-yard butterfly; Christopher Randall, 10, of Vernon Hills in 50-yard backstroke; Trevor Halloway, 15, of Libertyville in 100-yard butterfly; and Madelyn Goodman, 10, of Lindenhurst in 100-yard freestyle.

Cowell attends convention
Brad Cowell of SERVPRO of Libertyville/North Chicago City/Lake Bluff joined a record number of fellow SERVPRO franchise owners at SERVPRO’s 43rd Annual National Convention. The convention was held at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Fla. in June.
In addition to educational and professional development opportunities, the week-long convention provides a chance for the SERVPRO System’s more than 1,600 franchise owners to network with other owners and industry experts to learn and share the latest ideas.
Landgraf honored with award
Lake Forest Graduate School of Management (LFGSM) has honored John C. Landgraf, executive vice president nutritional products for Abbott Laboratories, with its Distinguished Executive Award for 2012. An LFGSM Class of 1992 Valedictorian, Landgraf accepted the award and delivered the commencement address to the LFGSM Class of 2012 at graduation ceremonies held in the Navy Pier Grand Ballroom on June 24, 2012.
A resident of Libertyville, Landgraf joined Abbott Laboratories in 1977 and rose to his current position in 2011, where he oversees annual sales totaling more than $6.5 billion.
Active in the community and a strong advocate of education, Landgraf serves on the boards for the Northern Illinois University, North East Illinois Council - Boy Scouts of America, and Mailisita Foundation and Education Center. He also was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement from LFGSM in 2007.
Cocktail discussions are offered
North Shore Distillery and Tavern Lounge announce a new series of monthly cocktail parties and discussions to help educate, engage and delight the cocktail-curious and dedicated cocktail lovers alike at The Tavern in downtown Libertyville.
All curious drinkers, cocktail fans and others are invited to explore the basics of great cocktails, as well as specific types and eras in American history. These events will be monthly, on the third Thursday of each month, starting in August. Scheduled dates include Aug. 16, Sept. 20 and Oct. 18.
