Newsmakers: American Heart Association honors Libertyville’s Burke

On June 27, Sandra Burke of Libertyville received the American Heart Association’s Louis B. Russell Jr. Memorial Award, which is conferred annually upon an individual who has rendered outstanding service to minority and underserved populations.
Now retired, Burke was director of cardiovascular biology research at Abbott Laboratories. She was recognized for her efforts to address health disparities in underserved minority communities in Chicago.
An American Heart Association volunteer since 1982, Burke has chaired the Chicago Metro Diversity Task Force since 2007 to increase awareness of cardiovascular disease and its risk factors. She also has chaired or co-chaired numerous Power To End Stroke events and has led Go Red For Women outreach to minority women. She has been a member of the Diversity Leadership Committee since 2008.
She has made numerous presentations, especially at local schools and churches, on topics ranging from stroke risk factors to careers in the life sciences. In addition to reaching hundreds of thousands of Chicagoans with cardiovascular health messaging, Burke has helped position the AHA as a critical community partner focused on reducing and eliminating health disparities.
Metzler promoted to
associate
RHMG Engineers, Inc., a consulting engineering firm with offices in Mundelein, has announced that Benjamin W. Metzler has been promoted to associate within the firm.
Metzler is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He has five years of professional experience and has been responsible for several sewer and water, roadway and site development projects.
Metzler is a licensed professional engineer in the Stae of Illinois and resides in Libertyville.
Students collect
clothing for Condell
A group of Libertyville High School students with an interest in medical careers is already making a difference to emergency room patients at Advocate Condell Medical Center.
The Medcats group has been collecting and delivering donated clothing for use by patients after they are discharged from the Emergency Department. The group also is stocking Condell’s Pediatric ED with crayons and activity books to keep young patients and visitors distracted and comfortable.
The 20-member group meets twice a month during the school year to learn about the medical profession and health care, with an emphasis on community service. This spring, students collected clothing, which is given to trauma patients whose clothing has been damaged or must be left behind for a police investigation.
The club began in 2011, when students Jason Leib and Rankin Draa approached Libertyville High School nurse Cameron Traut. Leib, the club’s co-leader, got involved to explore a possible career in surgery.
VHHS grad Juhn
receives award
The Buffalo Grove Garden Club announces that Mark Juhn is their 2012 Scholarship Winner. Juhn graduated from Vernon Hills High School and will be going to the University of Chicago in the fall. He plans to major in botany with a personal goal to study ways to eradicate world hunger.
Club offers support through projects
The Libertyville Junior Woman’s Club has concluded its 2011/2012 club season.
The year was packed with many different philanthropic projects. Just to name a few, Pumpkin fest held in Downtown Libertyville, Adopt an Apartment project with the Lake County Haven, as well as helping those in our community, babies to seniors, with their involvement with the Pregnancy Counseling Center in Mundelein to providing meals on wheels and desserts to our communities senior citizens.
Their big fundraiser of the year was held at Arlington Race Track to celebrate the Kentucky Derby, with over $17,000 raised to benefit the Lexi Kazian Foundation.
The Libertyville Juniors meet the first Tuesday of every month (September-June) at 7 p.m. at the Libertyville Civic Center.
