MUNDELEIN — For the first time, a former Mundelein woman will stand trial on attempted murder charges from an alleged sledgehammer attack in 2003.

Sandra Rogers took a plea deal in 2004 which earned her a 30-year prison term for attacking her ex-husband and his new wife while they slept in their Linconshire home May 19, 2003.

However, Rogers entered an Alford plea, meaning she did not directly admit guilt for the crime. She served about seven and a half years in prison until her case came back to Lake County.

Rogers alleged the attorney who represented her was ineffective because he failed to investigate a jail corrections officer who allegedly passed a message between Rogers and co-defendant Jonathan McMeekin.

McMeekin pleaded guilty to helping Rogers break into the residence and is serving a 20-year prison sentence, meaning neither defendant had to stand trial for the brutal attack in 2003.

Attorneys said Wednesday that there would be a trial this year. Defense attorney Gillian Gosch and prosecutor George Pappas agreed to move the trial from Sept. 24 to Nov. 5.

Lake County Circuit Judge John Phillips also granted an order that street clothes will be made available to Rogers.

Rogers is in custody at Lake County Jail in lieu of $4 million bond. She is due back in court Oct. 10.

McMeekin, 26, is in custody at Lawrence Correctional Center.

His projected parole date is Aug. 20, 2020, according to Illinois Department of Corrections.
