Mundelein Fourth of July fireworks show canceled

Updated: August 13, 2012 6:16AM

Mundelein decided to cancel its annual Fourth of July fireworks display due to concerns about a potential fire hazard, but the holiday fireworks shows in Libertyville and Vernon Hills went on.

Mundelein officials cited the extremely dry weather conditions and the potential for high winds as the reason for canceling the fireworks show. Officials decided after discussions with Mundelein fire safety personnel and a representative of the fireworks company, Pyrotecnico, Inc.

“The Village of Mundelein fireworks display is very close to a heavily populated and wooded residential subdivision which greatly increased the concerns for public safety. The risk of fire from falling cinders was a serious concern,” a village press release stated.

A fireworks reschedule date has yet to be determined.

Libertyille decided to go forward with its Fourth of July fireworks show as planned in Butler Lake Park.

After consulting with the fire department, Libertyville Mayor Terry Weppler said the village decided to go ahead with the fireworks show because it believes it can be done safely since the shells are shot off over Butler Lake.

The Vernon Hills July 4 fireworks went off as planned.
